Lying snugly at the South of North Male Atoll in the Maldives, the Hulhumale Island is a beautiful combination of the nostalgia of the past and the thrill of the future. This artificial, reclaimed island lies around 8 kilometers off the North East Coast of Male and was created to ease the housing crisis and congestion in Male, as well as to make way for future commercial and industrial development. The whole island sprawls across a massive 188 hectares and is made up of a delightful blend of urban and island life.

Although it is not the first time an artificial island made its way into existence, the island of Hulhumale is unique in that although it was designed to extend the boundaries of Male, it is retained its natural charm. It is barely different to most other Maldivian islands and its freshly planted trees, open beaches; golden-white sand and azure blue waters are simply awe-inspiring. This island is also home to a famous, golden-domed mosque.

The island of Hulhumale was built in the quest to create a new land mass with several green initiatives in mind. Green architecture and green energy have certainly been the building blocks of this island and there are many more green initiatives in progress. It is, in fact, the first of the inhabited islands to go against littering. A walk through the island reveals well-planned bins and an advanced waste disposal and collection system in place. Not very far lies the airport, making Hulhumale a great spot to stop off at before or after a flight. There are several nice restaurants throughout the island, and surf and dive tourism that can be indulged in while visitors put up at one of the guest houses.
